Bambaragala archaeological site
The Bambaragala Archaeological Site, located in the Bambaragala Grama Niladhari Division of the Weligepola Divisional Secretariat, can be described as a unique archaeological monument in the Ratnapura District. This special shrine can be reached by traveling about 6 km on the Galpaya Road from Pallabedda town, off the Palmadulla-Embilipitiya main road.
According to historical evidence, it can be identified that this place existed as a Buddhist monastic environment from the 2nd century BCE to the 12th century CE. Around 15 caves, including six ancient caves with inscriptions, are found in this location. Brahmi script inscriptions dating back to the 3rd century BCE have been found in relation to the Bambaragala caves. The largest cave in this complex, Kanabiso Cave, measures 100 feet in length and 24 feet in width. The front part of this cave has been carved out to a length of 24 feet. The back is enclosed with a brick wall, and it has been equipped with a staircase and a window for access.
Archaeological research has found evidence of human settlement in this area around 3100 years ago.
